Chapter 3: Whispers in the Dark

Two months after the fire, Clara overheard a conversation that chilled her to the bone. She was wiping down the hallway cabinets late at night when Richard’s voice carried through the study door, sharp and cold.
""The doctor said the nerve damage in his legs is permanent without expensive experimental therapy in Switzerland,"" Richard was saying to his attorney over a secure line. ""And frankly, the public relations benefit of having a disabled child is wearing thin. The media has moved on.""
""What about the trust fund set up by his grandfather?"" the attorney asked through the speakerphone.
""The trust dictates that if Toby is placed under permanent institutional care due to severe medical incapacity before his eighth birthday, the remaining eighty percent of the estate funds revert back to Victoria and me,"" Richard replied coldly. ""We’re filing the paperwork next month to transfer him to the Oakridge Care Facility out in the countryside.""
Clara backed away slowly, her heart pounding against her ribs. Oakridge was a notorious, cold, low-rated facility hidden away from public view—a place where wealthy families sent relatives they wanted the world to forget. They weren't trying to help Toby recover; they were warehousing him to claim his grandfather's inheritance.

She hurried into Toby’s room. The little boy was fast asleep, holding a small wooden toy car Clara had bought him with her own meager wages. He looked so frail, so innocent, completely unaware that his own parents were preparing to trade his freedom for millions of dollars.
Clara knelt beside his bed, tears streaming down her face. She had no money, no powerful family, and no legal standing. But as she looked at Toby's peaceful face, she made a quiet resolve. She would not let them destroy this child.
