Chapter 14: Belonging

The final family court hearing was a world away from the stressful criminal trial months earlier.

Judge Miller, a kind elderly woman with warm eyes, sat at the bench reviewing a thick stack of reports from social workers, child psychologists, and character witnesses from Pine Ridge.

""Miss Mercer,"" Judge Miller spoke, looking over her glasses. ""The reports state that Tobias has made unprecedented physical and psychological progress over the last two years under your care. He is thriving academically, physically, and emotionally.""

Clara sat beside Eleanor Vance, her hands neatly folded in her lap, her heart fluttering with anticipation.

""Mr. and Mrs. Asheford have officially signed all termination papers,"" the judge continued. ""And today, this court considers your formal petition for full legal adoption.""

Judge Miller turned to Toby, who was sitting proudly in a navy blue sweater. ""Tobias, is this what you want? Do you want Clara Mercer to be your legal mother?""

Toby stood up from his chair, his posture straight and confident. ""She’s been my mom since the night of the fire, Your Honor. Now I just want it on paper.""

Judge Miller smiled warmly, bringing down her wooden gavel with a firm tap.

""Petition granted. Congratulations, Clara. Congratulations, Tobias. You are officially family.""

Toby threw his arms around Clara’s neck. Clara pulled him tight, burying her face in his shoulder as tears of pure relief and joy finally poured freely down her face. They were no longer running. They were finally home.
