Chapter 1: Ashes of the Past

The orange glow of the burning mansion reflected in Clara’s tear-streaked eyes as she held little Toby tightly against her chest. The heat from the roaring fire retreated into the cold night air, leaving behind the suffocating stench of soot and burnt oak. Around them, the elite guests of the Asheford annual gala stood frozen, their pristine tuxedoes and silk gowns immaculate, untouched by the chaos.

Among them stood Richard and Victoria Asheford—Toby’s biological parents. Victoria’s emerald gown caught the flashing red lights of the arriving fire engines, but her face remained rigid. Not a single smudge of soot marred her porcelain skin. She had spent the entire evening ensuring her status was secured among the town’s wealthiest, while her six-year-old son, bound to a wheelchair on the third floor, had been forgotten in the panic.

""Is he... fine?"" Victoria asked, taking a hesitant step forward, though her hands remained firmly inside her faux-fur wrap. She didn't reach out to take her son.

Clara felt Toby trembling violently against her dirty, tear-soaked pink maid outfit. His small hands clutched her collar as if she were the only anchor in a storm. ""He’s alive, Mrs. Asheford,"" Clara said, her voice raspy from smoke inhalation. Her throat burned, and her arms ached, but she refused to put him down.

Richard adjusted his bowtie nervously, looking around to see if the local reporters were watching. ""Good. Put him in the town car, Clara. We need to handle the press before this becomes a scandal.""

Toby hid his face in Clara’s neck. ""Don't leave me, Clara,"" he whispered, his small voice barely audible over the crackling flames.

Clara looked at the cold, calculating eyes of the Ashefords, then down at the terrified boy who had spent his entire life hidden in a grand mansion like an inconvenient secret. In that moment, something shifted inside her. She wasn't just his nanny or a paid servant anymore. She was the only person who cared whether he breathed.

""I'm right here, Toby,"" Clara murmured softly, kissing his forehead. ""I'm not going anywhere.""
