Chapter 15: The Light We Keep

Ten years later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the green hills of Pine Ridge. The small town was celebrating its annual community festival, and the town park was filled with music, laughter, and the mouth-watering scent of grilled food.
At the center of the park stood a brand-new youth rehabilitation and arts center. A large wooden sign out front read: The Haven Center.
A eighteen-year-old young man stood on the wooden stage before a crowd of local residents. He was tall, handsome, and walked with a slight, confident stride—completely free of crutches or canes. It was Toby.
""Thank you, everyone, for coming today,"" Toby spoke into the microphone, his voice deep and warm. ""Ten years ago, I thought my life was defined by the walls of a burning house and the physical limits of my body. I thought love was something you had to earn through wealth or status.""
He looked toward the front row, where Clara sat. She looked radiant, her hair silvering slightly at the temples, wearing a simple lavender dress and a warm, proud smile.
""But one person showed me that true family isn't born from blood or money,"" Toby continued, his eyes glistening with emotion. ""It’s born from sacrifice. It’s born from the courage to walk through fire for someone else.""

The crowd applauded warmly as Toby stepped down from the stage and walked straight over to Clara, pulling her into a tight, loving embrace.
They stood together under the warm sunshine, surrounded by friends, safety, and endless love—a long way from the ashes of the past, fully living in the bright, beautiful light they had built together.
