Chapter 11: The Winter Storm

December brought a heavy snowstorm to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The town was blanketed in quiet white, and roads were blocked by deep drifts.
When the power cut out across Willow Creek, Lucas hiked through the snow to check on Amy and her mother. He arrived carrying armfuls of dry firewood and a thermos of hot soup.
""You didn't have to walk through a blizzard, Lucas!"" Sarah exclaimed, ushering him into the warm living room.
""Couldn't leave you two freezing,"" Lucas gritted with a grin, shaking snow off his heavy coat.
That night, as the fireplace crackled and threw warm shadows across the room, Sarah retired early, leaving Lucas and Amy by the hearth.
They sat side-by-side on the rug, wrapped in thick wool blankets. The storm raged outside, but inside, the atmosphere was safe and serene.
""I used to think my life had to follow a script,"" Amy murmured, watching the flames. ""School, high-society wedding, corporate career. I thought any detour was a failure.""
Lucas looked at her softly. ""And now?""
""Now I think the detours are where real life actually happens,"" she whispered, looking up into his eyes.

Lucas reached out, his rough thumb gently stroking her cheek. ""I’m glad your path led you back here, Amy.""
Slowly, without rush or hesitation, he leaned in and kissed her—a soft, tender kiss that tasted of cedar and cinnamon, anchoring her completely in the present.
