Chapter 9 - The Flashbulb Storm

The blinding flash of a camera bulb cut through the dusty air of the staircase like lightning, painting the peeling wallpaper in stark, fleeting white. Shouting voices echoed from the front lawn below—reporters and local news crews shouting overlapping questions about the Sterling family scandal, corporate fraud, and the shocking discovery of an abandoned child hidden in plain sight. Arthur flinched at the noise, his aristocratic dignity finally cracking as he realized his family name was about to be dragged through the mud across every national headline by nightfall.

David pulled Leo tighter against his chest, instinctively turning the boy's face away from the windows lining the front landing. Agent Vance moved quickly, signaling to the remaining police officers to clear a path through the side service exit to avoid the media swarm camped out by the front porch.

"Stay close behind me, Mr. Miller," Agent Vance instructed, her voice cutting sharply through the rising din of the paparazzi outside. "We have an unmarked vehicle waiting by the alleyway. We need to move before those reporters breach the property line."

They descended the back staircase—a narrow, utilitarian flight of stairs that Martha had forced Leo to use exclusively for the past year, treating him like an unwanted ghost in his own home. Every step down felt symbolic, a literal descent away from the prison of pretense and cruelty that had defined their lives for far too long. Leo clutched the fabric of David’s dark shirt, his small heart hammering against his ribs, yet feeling a strange, unfamiliar sense of safety he had never known.

As they reached the rear exit, the cool autumn air hit their faces, crisp and clean. A plain gray sedan idled near the detached garage, its engine humming quietly. The second police officer held the rear door open, shielding them from any stray cameras that might have caught a glimpse from the neighboring yards.

David slid into the backseat, pulling Leo in beside him on the worn cloth upholstery. Agent Vance climbed into the front passenger seat, slamming her briefcase shut with a sharp click that signaled the end of one nightmare and the terrifying, uncertain beginning of another. The car pulled away from the curb smoothly, navigating the winding suburban streets just as three black news vans turned the corner toward the house.

Looking out the tinted rear window, Leo watched the sprawling, opulent mansion shrink into the distance. The grand white pillars and manicured hedges that had looked like a fortress of security from the outside now looked like a mausoleum of secrets. He leaned his head against David’s shoulder, watching the familiar neighborhood blur into a stream of gray and green.

"We're never going back there, right?" Leo whispered, his hazel eyes reflecting the passing scenery.

David wrapped his arm around the boy’s thin shoulders, pulling him closer into his warmth. "Never, Leo. I promise you, we are never going back."

The car turned onto the main highway, accelerating toward the downtown federal plaza where the paperwork awaited them. But as they merged into the heavy morning traffic, a sleek black sedan pulled out from a side street behind them, tailing their unmarked car at a precise, unnerving distance.
