Chapter 14 - The Breakout Run

The tires of the gray sedan shrieked against the concrete floor as Agent Vance slammed her foot onto the gas pedal, ripping the car out of the parking bay before the federal agents could block the exit. Marcus shouted an angry command, his voice swallowed by the deafening roar of the engine as the vehicle surged up the ramp toward the blinding daylight of the city streets.
In the backseat, Leo pressed his face against the tinted side window, watching the figures of the armed guards and Marcus shrink into the shadows of the subterranean entrance. His heart hammered wildly against his ribs, tears streaming down his pale cheeks as he realized David was left behind in the concrete trap.
"Dad! They left my dad back there!" Leo cried out, his small fists pounding desperately against the leather seat cushions.
Agent Vance didn't look back, her hands gripping the steering wheel with white-knuckled intensity as she navigated the chaotic downtown traffic. She reached blindly across the console, grabbing her encrypted radio and switching to a secure, unmonitored frequency that bypassed the federal precinct entirely.
"This is Agent Vance, badge four-zero-nine. I am declaring an emergency operational extraction under whistleblower protection protocols," she shouted into the receiver, her voice sharp and authoritative. "We have compromised senior leadership at the municipal plaza. I am transporting a protected witness and legal custodial parent to the state attorney general's private residence immediately. Lock down all public comms."
The radio crackled with a burst of static, followed by a firm, reassuring voice on the other end. "Copy that, Agent Vance. The Attorney General’s team is already mobilizing a tactical escort to meet your vehicle at the county line. Hang on; you're about to have company."
The driver of their gray sedan checked the rearview mirrors frantically. "Agent, we've got two unmarked black SUVs tailing us two blocks back. They're closing fast!"
Agent Vance cursed under her breath, cutting hard across three lanes of traffic and narrowly avoiding a delivery truck as she forced the sedan onto the highway on-ramp. The vehicle surged forward, accelerating past the speed limit as the sprawling cityscape gave way to the dense forests of the state parkway.
In the back, Leo’s frantic sobbing slowly subsided into exhausted, ragged breaths. He looked out the window at the blurred trees rushing past, his small mind struggling to process the whirlwind of violence, betrayal, and sudden flight that had stolen his childhood in less than a single morning. He closed his big hazel eyes for a brief moment, whispering a silent prayer that his father would somehow survive the trap he had walked into to save him.

Suddenly, the gray sedan shuddered violently as a loud pop echoed from the rear passenger side. A tire had blown out. The car fishtailed wildly across the asphalt, the driver fighting desperately to keep control as they careened toward the concrete guardrail of the highway bridge.
