Chapter 10 - The Shadow in the Rearview Mirror

The gray sedan wove smoothly through the dense downtown traffic, heading toward the granite facade of the federal municipal building. Agent Vance sat in the front passenger seat, reviewing a stack of digital case files on a secure tablet, the blue light illuminating her focused expression. In the back, David stared straight ahead, his arm still wrapped securely around Leo, who had finally drifted off into a light, exhausted sleep against his side. The rhythmic hum of the tires against the asphalt provided a temporary, fragile peace.
In the rearview mirror, however, the sleek black sedan remained locked onto their bumper. For three miles, through four red lights and a complicated highway interchange, the mysterious vehicle mirrored their every turn, maintaining a precise, unblinking distance that defied normal traffic patterns.
Agent Vance glanced up from her tablet, catching the lead officer’s furrowed brow in the rearview mirror. She turned around slightly, her professional instincts instantly flaring as she scanned the lane behind them.
"Officer, check your six," Agent Vance murmured, her voice dropping into a tense whisper so as not to wake the sleeping boy. "That black sedan has been tailing us since we left the subdivision. It's not a news crew."
The driver tightened his grip on the steering wheel, his eyes darting to both side mirrors. "Yeah, I noticed. No plates visible in the front grill, and heavily tinted windows. Could be Sterling's private security detail trying to intercept the transfer before we reach the federal docket."
David’s jaw tightened, a familiar surge of protective anger flaring up in his chest. He shifted slightly, careful not to disturb Leo, and peered through the tinted rear glass. The black sedan looked ominous, gliding through the morning traffic like a predator tracking a wounded animal. Arthur Sterling was powerful, but even an empire built on real estate corruption had limits—or so David had foolishly believed.
"If Arthur thinks he can intimidate us out of filing these federal charges, he's gravely mistaken," David said, his voice flat and hard as stone.
Before the driver could respond, the black sedan accelerated aggressively, cutting across two lanes of traffic and closing the gap between them in seconds. The driver of their gray sedan swore under his breath, stepping hard on the gas pedal to maintain distance as they approached the federal plaza’s secure underground entrance.

The security gate of the federal parking garage loomed ahead, its red warning light blinking rhythmically in the dim light of the subterranean tunnel. The driver punched the security code into the dashboard keypad, waiting for the heavy iron gate to lift. But as the gate began its slow, mechanical crawl upward, the black sedan screeched into the alleyway behind them, blocking the exit entirely and cutting off their only route of retreat.
