Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Arrival

The heavy thud of footsteps climbing the wooden staircase froze everyone in the hallway. Martha scrambled to her feet, wiping her tear-stained cheeks with the back of her hand, panic surging anew as she recognized the cadence of those steps. David tightened his grip on Leo, holding the boy securely against his chest while shielding him from the stairwell. Even Martha’s biological children fell dead silent, turning their anxious gazes toward the corridor as the shadow of a tall figure stretched across the wall.

An elderly man in a charcoal tweed jacket rounded the corner, carrying a heavy leather briefcase. It was Arthur, Martha’s estranged father and the patriarch of a family fortune built on real estate investments and tightly guarded legal trusts. Arthur stopped abruptly, taking in the tableau of devastation: the scattered papers across the kitchen floor, Martha’s disheveled state, and David standing protective over a child who clearly did not belong in the narrative Arthur had been fed for years.

"What in God's name is going on in this house?" Arthur demanded, his voice booming with the authority of a man accustomed to commanding entire boardrooms. He dropped his briefcase onto the floor, the heavy thud rattling the decorative plates on the nearby console table. "Martha, why are you sitting on the floor? And who authorized this boy to be inside the main quarters?"

Martha opened her mouth, stammering incoherently as she tried to assemble a lie from the wreckage of the documents still scattered behind her. But before she could form a single coherent sentence, David stepped forward, his dark eyes locked onto the older man with a cold, unforgiving intensity that made Arthur pause.

"Your daughter didn't just hide a child, Arthur," David said, his voice ringing with a deadly calm. "She engineered an illegal adoption scheme, buried the financial trails in your corporate accounts, and tried to starve my flesh and blood under our own roof."

Arthur’s face drained of color, his aristocratic posture stiffening as his gaze dropped to the scattered paperwork on the kitchen floor. He recognized the official letterhead instantly—it bore the seal of his own corporate legal counsel, a department he had explicitly instructed to audit family assets six months ago. The horrifying realization that Martha had used his own corporate infrastructure to launder the adoption payoffs hit him like a physical blow.

"That's... that's impossible," Arthur whispered, taking a half-step back as he looked at his daughter for a denial. "Martha, tell me he's lying. Tell me you didn't touch the trust funds for this."

Martha stared at her father, her lips trembling as she realized the web of lies had finally trapped the architect herself. She opened her mouth to speak, but before the words could form, a loud knock echoed from the front door downstairs, followed immediately by the heavy clanking of metal badges.
