Chapter 12 - The Prosecutor's Gambit

The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting a harsh, sickly glow over the subterranean garage. Marcus Vance—the senior federal prosecutor who was supposed to be spearheading the investigation into Martha Sterling—stood beside their car window, holding a freshly printed arrest warrant that bore David Miller’s name in bold, unyielding typography.
Agent Vance stared at her superior, her professional composure shattering into absolute disbelief. She pressed her hand against the dashboard, leaning forward so hard her knuckles turned white.
"Marcus, have you lost your mind?" Agent Vance demanded, her voice cracking with betrayal. "David is the victim here! His wife ran an illegal adoption ring and held his son hostage for eight years. You can't issue a warrant for him!"
Marcus didn't blink. His expression was completely devoid of emotion, carved from the same cold marble as the system he served. He ignored Agent Vance entirely, focusing his piercing gaze through the cracked window directly onto David, who sat clutching Leo in the backseat.
"Mr. Miller, you are being formally charged with federal conspiracy, wire fraud, and the intentional abandonment of a minor under interstate commerce laws," Marcus stated, his voice ringing flat and emotionless in the concrete echo chamber. "Step out of the vehicle with your hands visible."
Leo let out a terrified sob, his little arms wrapping tightly around David’s neck as he buried his face in his father's shoulder. "Dad, don't let them take you! You didn't do anything wrong!"
David felt a cold fury wash over him, burning away every ounce of exhaustion and fear. He looked at the prosecutor, connecting the dots that Martha’s frantic phone calls and Arthur’s corporate wire transfers had hinted at all morning. The adoption fraud wasn't just a rogue operation run by a bitter wife; it was a multi-million-dollar laundering pipeline protected by high-ranking federal officials who needed a convenient scapegoat to take the fall when the house of cards collapsed.
"You're covering for Arthur Sterling," David said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register that made the driver flinch. "Martha used your office's shell companies to fund the entire syndicate, and now you're trying to pin it on me to keep your own name out of the indictments."
Marcus tapped the glass with his gold signet ring once more, his eyes narrowing. "You signed the initial intake papers eight years ago, David. Legally, you were the architect of the contract that started this entire chain of events. Whether you knew about the forgery later is irrelevant to the federal grand jury. Step out of the car, or we take the boy into protective custody immediately."

The threat hung in the air like a guillotine blade. David looked down at Leo, whose big hazel eyes were wide with pure terror, looking up at him as if he were the only shield standing between the boy and an abyss of endless cruelty.
