Chapter 13 - The Ultimatum

The heavy silence inside the subterranean garage pressed down like a physical weight. Agent Vance glared at the senior prosecutor, her hand hovering over the panic button on her encrypted radio as she weighed the consequences of open insubordination against a corrupt federal chain of command. The driver of their gray sedan kept his hand locked on his holster, beads of sweat forming along his hairline as he awaited David’s move.
"You can't do this, Marcus," Agent Vance hissed, her voice trembling with barely contained fury. "The state registry already invalidated the secondary waivers. The kid stays with his father, and the entire Sterling syndicate is going down whether you sign this warrant or not."
Marcus didn't flinch. He leaned in closer to the cracked window, his eyes locking onto David with chilling indifference. "Agent Vance, your career in this department ends the moment you file those unapproved state records. As for Mr. Miller, he can either step out of this vehicle right now and face the grand jury on his own terms, or we execute the emergency custody clause and place the boy in an undisclosed state facility while his legal status is litigated for the next five years. Choose wisely."
Leo heard the words, his small body trembling violently against David’s chest. The nightmare of the hallway doorway, of being denied a simple piece of bread, of being treated like an unwanted ghost—it all rushed back, magnified a thousand times by the terrifying threat of being locked away in a system that had already failed him once.
"Dad... please don't let them take me back there," Leo whispered, his voice breaking into a heartbroken sob that tore at the very core of David’s soul. "I want to stay with you."
David looked down at his son, his mind racing through a hundred impossible scenarios. He knew the federal prosecutor held all the institutional cards. If David fought back physically, they would slap him with assault charges, lock him away in a maximum-security holding cell, and hand Leo directly over to the state foster system—right back into the hands of people who would exploit him just like Martha did. The system was rigged, corrupt to its core, but sacrificing himself was the only way to keep the boy safe.
Slowly, deliberately, David unbuckled his seatbelt. He kissed the top of Leo’s messy light brown hair, his own eyes burning with unshed tears that he forced back with every ounce of his willpower.
"Listen to me, Leo," David whispered fiercely, pulling the boy back so their eyes locked. "No matter what happens next, I am your father. I will never stop fighting for you. Agent Vance is going to take you somewhere safe. You hear me?"
May you like
Before Leo could protest, David pushed the car door open, stepping out into the cold fluorescent light of the garage and raising his hands palms-up toward the federal prosecutor. Marcus smiled coldly, stepping back as two armed federal agents rushed forward with steel cuffs ready. But as the cold metal touched David’s wrists, Agent Vance slammed her foot onto the accelerator, tearing the gray sedan out of the parking bay with Leo still inside, leaving Marcus stranded in the exhaust fumes.
