Chapter 8

The dust settled in the ruined office as Marcus planted his knee firmly onto Thomas's chest, pinning the corporate lawyer to the floor among the fallen books and shattered wood. Thomas gasped for air, his face turning a deep shade of crimson as the wind was knocked completely out of his lungs. He dropped the stun baton, the electrical arc sputtering and dying against the carpet. Marcus stared down at him, his chest heaving, his knuckles bruised and bleeding from the impact against the floor tiles.

"It's over, Thomas," Marcus said, his voice deep, steady, and terrifyingly calm. "The restructuring scheme is exposed, the offshore accounts are frozen, and I am walking away. If you or any of your associates come near Clara or the baby again, I won't just hand you over to the feds—I will dismantle every single shell company you've built with my bare hands." Thomas managed a weak, blood-flecked smirk, wheezing as he looked past Marcus toward Elena standing frozen by the window.

"You think Marcus is the hero here, Elena?" Thomas rasped, spitting a drop of blood onto the plush carpet. "Ask him who authorized the initial transfers ten years ago. Ask him whose signature is on the very first shell company document you found on that kitchen floor." Elena felt the air leave her lungs. She slowly shifted her gaze from Thomas to Marcus, her eyes demanding an answer to the accusation that threatened to upend everything she thought she had finally understood about the chaos.

Marcus closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, a profound, weary defeat washing over his muscular frame. He slowly released his grip on Thomas's collar, standing up and stepping backward. He didn't look at Elena immediately; instead, he stared down at his bloodied hands as if he barely recognized them. "He's right," Marcus said quietly, his voice devoid of all anger, leaving only a hollow, haunting echo in the ruined room. "I started it. Ten years ago, I signed the papers that brought this syndicate into our lives, thinking I could control it and walk away whenever I wanted."

Elena gripped the edge of the desk, her knuckles turning white. The betrayal cut deeper than she could have ever imagined. The man who had rushed into the kitchen to protect his family, the man who had just fought to save her from Thomas, was the very architect of the nightmare that had destroyed their lives. "You lied to me," Elena whispered, her voice cracking with suppressed emotion. "You let me spend months investigating a crime you committed, all while playing the innocent bystander."

"I lied to protect you," Marcus replied, finally looking up to meet her tear-filled eyes. "When I realized what the syndicate actually was—that they wouldn't let me leave without destroying everyone I loved—I started gathering the evidence myself. Those papers on the kitchen floor weren't just my crimes, Elena. They were my confession, and my blueprint to bring them all down from the inside." Thomas groaned, struggling to sit up against the ruined bookshelf, his smug expression returning as he watched the two of them unravel.
