Chapter 7

Before Thomas could take another step toward Elena, a sharp, metallic crash echoed from the hallway outside the private office suite. Thomas froze, his hand halting halfway into his coat pocket as his head snapped toward the heavy oak door. A muffled scuffle, followed by the heavy thud of a body slamming against the corridor drywall, broke the tense silence of the empty twelfth floor. Elena seized the momentary distraction, lunging sideways across the plush carpet to put the massive mahogany desk between herself and the corporate lawyer.

"What is that?" Thomas muttered under his breath, his professional composure cracking as he realized his perimeter was compromised. He drew a sleek, matte-black stun baton from his jacket, flicking the switch with his thumb so that a lethal arc of blue electricity hissed between the metal prongs. He ignored Elena for a moment, turning his attention entirely toward the locked door as footsteps rapidly approached from the outside. Whoever was in the hallway was moving with incredible speed and raw, athletic power.

With a deafening crash, the heavy oak door splintered off its reinforced hinges, flying inward and smashing against the side wall. Thomas spun around, raising the crackling stun baton just as a figure burst into the office. It wasn't federal agents or corporate security; it was Marcus. His grey button-up shirt was torn at the shoulder, sweat glistening on his bald head, and his chest heaving with exhaustion and fury. Marcus took one look at Thomas holding the weapon, and without a single word, he launched himself across the room with terrifying momentum.

Thomas barely had time to raise his baton before Marcus collided with him like a freight train. The two men crashed into the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf against the side wall, sending heavy leather-bound law books cascading down in a noisy avalanche. Elena pressed herself flat against the window glass, watching in stunned disbelief as the two powerful men grappled violently among the scattered papers and splinters of wood. Marcus had traded his role as the suburban family protector for that of an aggressive brawler, fighting with a desperate, frantic energy that defied logic.

"Marcus! Are you insane?" Thomas choked out, struggling to push the massive man away as Marcus's forearm pressed heavily against his windpipe. "We're on the same side! Stop this right now!" Marcus didn't answer with words. He drove his fist downward with controlled, brutal precision, striking the floor right beside Thomas's head and shattering the decorative floor tiles. "You touch her, and I swear to God I will bury you right here alongside the ledger," Marcus snarled, his voice vibrating with a primal fury that chilled the room.

Elena watched the brutal confrontation unfold, her mind racing to piece together the shattered fragments of reality. Marcus wasn't trying to protect his criminal empire from her anymore; he was fighting Thomas. The realization hit her like a physical blow: Marcus was trying to cut ties with the syndicate that had trapped them all, and Thomas was the architect who refused to let him go. Clara, the baby, the house—they were all hostages in a much larger war between powerful men who viewed human lives as disposable corporate assets.
