Chapter 10

Elena rushed forward, dropping to her knees beside Marcus as he groaned, clutching his bruised shoulder where the heavy paperweight had struck him. "Are you alright?" she asked, her voice laced with urgent concern despite the chaos of the past few minutes. Marcus gritted his teeth, nodding slowly as he pushed himself up onto one knee. "I'll live," he muttered, grimacing in pain. "Thomas is running to the primary server room in the basement. If he wipes the central archives before we authenticate our files, the feds won't have enough corroborating data to secure the indictments."
Elena didn't hesitate. She pulled the encrypted flash drive from her pocket and extended her hand to help Marcus up to his feet. "Then we move right now," she said firmly, her professional instincts taking complete control over her personal turmoil. Together, they rushed out of the ruined office and down the shattered corridor, abandoning the corporate luxuries of the twelfth floor for the industrial underbelly of the building. The elevator was out of commission, disabled by the building's emergency security protocols during the scuffle, leaving only the concrete stairwell as their path downward.
The descent through the echoing stairwell was a blur of breathless motion. Elena's heels clicked furiously against the metal steps, while Marcus moved with heavy, measured strides, clutching his injured shoulder but pushing through the pain with sheer willpower. They reached the basement level in record time, bursting through the heavy fire door into the subterranean corridor that led to the primary server vaults. The air down here was freezing, chilled by industrial cooling units that roared like jet engines against the stone walls.

As they rounded the final corner leading to the server room, they saw Thomas standing frantically at the exterior master terminal. His fingers danced across the keyboard with desperate speed, initiating a total system purge that flashed warning lights in angry red across the overhead monitors. "Stop right there, Thomas!" Marcus shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls with thunderous authority. Thomas spun around, a manic grin spreading across his bloodied face as he pressed the final enter key on the console.
"Too late!" Thomas laughed hysterically, pointing toward the large digital countdown clock on the central screen. "The core servers are wiping themselves clean as we speak. In sixty seconds, every trace of the syndicate's infrastructure—and your precious evidence, Elena—will be completely erased into digital oblivion." Elena stared at the screen, watching the numbers tick downward from 50... 49... 48... Her heart skipped a beat as she realized all their months of danger, sacrifice, and confrontation were about to evaporate into nothingness unless she acted immediately.
