Chapter 3

Marcus watched Elena with narrowed eyes, his breathing gradually steadying as the initial spike of adrenaline began to recede from his system. He stepped away from Clara, crossing his thick arms over his chest as he looked down at the documents littering the floor. The sunlight hitting the kitchen tiles made the black ink on the white pages stand out in sharp, unforgiving contrast. He knew every single paper represented a thread that could unravel his freedom, his reputation, and the carefully curated illusion of his domestic bliss.

"Get out, Elena. This is your final warning," Marcus said, his tone no longer screaming, but carrying an even more terrifying, chilling coldness. There was no emotion left in his face, only a grim determination to protect what he believed was his by any means necessary. Elena held her ground for a long, agonizing moment, measuring the man she thought she had known for years. She saw the hardened lines around his mouth, the cold detachment in his eyes, and realized that negotiation was entirely off the table.

Without breaking eye contact, Elena slowly backed toward the sliding glass door that led out to the back patio. She reached behind her, her fingers finding the latch and clicking it open with a soft metallic snap. The cool morning air rushed into the warm kitchen, carrying the scent of damp earth and blooming jasmine. "This isn't over, Marcus," she murmured, her voice carrying a quiet finality that hung heavily in the air. She slipped out through the opening, stepping onto the concrete patio just as Marcus lunged forward to slam and lock the glass door behind her.

Inside the kitchen, the sudden drop in ambient noise left Clara sobbing softly, her shoulders shaking as the adrenaline crash finally hit her nervous system. Marcus turned around, walking over to her slowly. He knelt down beside the terrified woman and the infant, his massive frame suddenly looking heavy and burdened rather than purely threatening. He reached out, his large hand resting gently on Clara's shoulder, offering a silent gesture of comfort that felt entirely hollow given the circumstances that had just unfolded.

"He's gone... she's gone," Marcus whispered, though his eyes remained fixed on the locked glass door, watching Elena's red dress fade into the distance as she walked down the driveway. Clara looked up at him, tears streaming down her pale cheeks, her voice trembling as she spoke the words they both dreaded. "She saw the offshore account numbers, didn't she? If she takes those to federal authorities, Marcus, we are finished. Everything we built will be gone by sundown." Marcus nodded slowly, his jaw clenching as he formulated a desperate counter-strategy.
