Chapter 6

Elena's heart hammered against her ribs as the second knock on her office door rattled the frame. Thomas was not just a corporate lawyer; he was the clean-up artist who handled the legal threats, intimidation campaigns, and silencing operations for Marcus's entire criminal syndicate. If Thomas was standing outside her door, it meant Marcus had mobilized his entire network within minutes of her departure. She quickly hit the eject command, snatching the small encrypted flash drive from the port and slipping it deep into the inner pocket of her red blazer.
"Elena, open the door," Thomas's voice echoed again, calmer this time, carrying that oily, professional smoothness that masked absolute ruthlessness. "We can handle this professionally. There's no need to ruin your career over a misunderstanding regarding corporate restructuring documents." Elena didn't answer. She stood up silently, stepping away from the glowing monitors. Her office had no second exit; it was a high-floor corporate suite with reinforced, bullet-resistant glass windows that looked out over the sprawling concrete plaza twelve stories below.
She backed toward the large executive desk, scanning the room for anything she could use as a makeshift barrier or weapon. The heavy mahogany desk was bolted to the floor, and the decorative brass lamp was too light to be effective. The knob of the office door began to turn. With a smooth, mechanical click, the heavy oak door swung inward. Thomas stepped into the dimly lit office, adjusting his expensive silk tie. He was a tall, impeccably dressed man in his late forties with thinning gray hair, silver-rimmed glasses, and a cold, predatory smile that never reached his eyes.
"There you are," Thomas said smoothly, closing the door behind him and locking it with a sharp click of the deadbolt. He leaned back against the wood, blocking the only way out of the room. "You really stepped into something far bigger than you realize, Elena. Marcus is desperate, and desperate men do catastrophic things. Hand over the drive, and you walk away with a handsome severance package and a clean NDA. Refuse, and you won't even make it out of this building alive."
May you like
Elena stood tall, her posture rigid, her chin tilted up in defiance. The fear that had spiked in her chest was rapidly crystallizing into pure, ice-cold resolve. "You think you can buy my silence with corporate hush money, Thomas? The files are already syncing to an off-site federal server. Even if you kill me right now, the authorities will have everything within the hour." Thomas's smooth smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine panic crossing his calculated features before he quickly masked it with a menacing chuckle.
"You compliance officers always think you're the smartest people in the room," Thomas said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, pulling a heavy silver-cased drive eraser from his coat pocket. "Let's see how smart you feel when everything you've worked on is wiped clean in five seconds flat." Elena gripped the edge of the desk, her eyes locked onto his, calculating the exact distance between them and bracing herself for the violent collision that was about to shatter the quiet corporate sanctuary.
