Chapter 12

The heavy steel security doors of the underground parking structure rattled as multiple flashing red and blue lights illuminated the damp concrete walls. Within moments, the entrance was swarming with federal law enforcement agents, their tactical gear and drawn badges cutting an imposing silhouette against the industrial lighting. Two senior investigators, led by a sharp-eyed woman named Special Agent Vance, marched briskly down the corridor toward the server room, their boots echoing sharply on the floor.
Agent Vance stopped at the entrance of the server vault, taking in the chaotic scene: Thomas slumped defeatist against the wall, Marcus standing with a bruised shoulder and torn shirt, and Elena standing calmly beside the glowing master console. Vance raised her hand, signaling the tactical team to lower their weapons, though her eyes remained sharp and analytical as she assessed every detail of the room. "Agent Vance, Federal Financial Crimes Task Force," she announced, flashing her badge. "Which one of you initiated the secure upload?"
"I did," Elena stepped forward, holding up her encrypted flash drive as proof. "Along with Marcus. The complete digital ledger, shell company accounts, and Marcus's formal confession logs have been successfully synced to your secure servers. Every transaction, every bribe, and every illicit wire transfer executed by this syndicate over the past decade is documented right here." Agent Vance nodded to one of her technical specialists, who immediately moved to the console to verify the data stream.
The technician typed a few commands, checked his handheld diagnostic tool, and looked up at Vance with a firm nod. "Agent Vance, it's legitimate. The data stream matches our active federal wiretap targets and independent offshore tracking. It's an airtight case; we have everything we need for immediate asset seizure and nationwide arrests." Vance turned her gaze back to Marcus and Elena, her expression softening slightly, though her professional demeanor remained strictly business.

"Marcus Vance and Thomas Sterling, you are both under arrest pending federal indictment for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy, and racketeering," Agent Vance stated clearly, signaling the tactical officers to step forward. Thomas didn't even attempt to resist, holding out his hands limply as the steel cuffs clicked into place around his wrists. Marcus didn't flinch either; he extended his hands willingly, offering one final glance toward Elena as the officers secured the restraints behind his back.
"What about Clara and the baby?" Marcus asked quietly, his voice laced with genuine paternal anxiety as the officers began leading him toward the exit. Agent Vance paused, looking back at him with a steady gaze. "Federal protective custody has already been dispatched to the residence. They are safe, Marcus. Your cooperation today ensures they won't pay the price for your mistakes." Elena watched as Marcus was led away into the flashing lights of the subterranean garage, feeling a strange mixture of closure and emptiness settle deep within her chest.
