Chapter 9: Clara’s Resolve

Back in her hospital room, the rhythmic hum of the IV drip provided a steady, somber soundtrack to Clara’s thoughts. The room was quiet, bathed in the soft afternoon light filtering through the window blinds. A knock at the door broke the silence, and Detective Miller stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder.
"Clara, how are you holding up?" the detective asked gently, taking a seat in the chair beside the bed.
"I'm surviving," Clara answered softly, her voice carrying a quiet strength that surprised even herself. "I heard about the arrests."
Detective Miller nodded. "Victoria Hayes is currently in holding without bail, facing charges of attempted murder and the unlawful termination of a pregnancy. Daniel Vance is cooperating fully, but he will also be facing serious felony charges for conspiracy."
Clara closed her eyes for a moment, letting the weight of the justice settle over her. It didn't bring her baby back, and it didn't erase the physical and emotional scars etched into her soul, but it provided a foundation upon which she could begin to rebuild.
"I want to testify," Clara said, opening her eyes and looking directly at the detective. "I want to be there every step of the way. I want them to look me in the eye and explain why my child had to pay the price for their greed."

"You’ll have your chance, Clara," Detective Miller assured her, placing a supportive hand on the edge of the mattress. "The district attorney is building an airtight case. With Daniel’s testimony and the forensic evidence from the vehicle, they won't be able to buy their way out of this."
"Good," Clara whispered, looking out the window toward the distant horizon where the sun was beginning to set. "Because I’m not hiding anymore. They thought they could run me over and erase me, but I'm still here."
