Chapter 3: The Ambulance Lights

The flashing red and blue lights of the arriving ambulance painted the gray asphalt in jagged, surreal strokes. Paramedics spilled out of the vehicle with practiced urgency, their heavy boots crunching against the gravel as they rushed toward the small, tense group in the parking lot. Clara lay motionless for a second, her energy draining fast, but her hand remained anchored to Daniel’s shirt.
"Sir, step back, let us work," a paramedic commanded, gently but firmly prying Clara’s fingers loose from Daniel’s sleeve.
Daniel stumbled backward, rising unsteadily to his feet. He looked down at his light blue shirt, now stained with a dark smudge of Clara’s blood. The visual proof of the tragedy seemed to anchor him to reality, draining the last bit of color from his face. He turned his head to look for Victoria, but she had already retreated to the passenger seat of the SUV, pulling the door shut with a heavy thud.
Clara was carefully lifted onto a gurney, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and lingering defiance. As they wheeled her toward the back of the ambulance, she caught a glimpse of Victoria watching through the tinted window of the SUV. There was no remorse in that gaze, only a cold, calculating assessment that sent a fresh chill down Clara’s spine, cutting deeper than the shock of the impact.
"Are you family?" a paramedic asked Daniel, holding the back doors open.

"I’m... yes, I’m the father," Daniel stammered, his voice cracking. He climbed into the back of the vehicle, the doors slamming shut with a finality that echoed in the quiet parking lot.
Inside the cramped, brightly lit interior of the ambulance, the frantic work began. Monitors beeped in a steady, nerve-wracking rhythm as oxygen was placed over Clara’s face. She grabbed the edge of the stretcher, her knuckles white, refusing to let go of consciousness. She knew secrets were buried beneath this accident, secrets that Victoria and Daniel had shared long before the bumper of that SUV met her body.
