Chapter 4: Hospital Corridors

The sterile smell of antiseptic and bleach replaced the scent of hot asphalt as the hospital doors swung open. Orderlies rushed the gurney down the brightly lit corridor, their sneakers squeaking against the linoleum floor. Daniel trailed closely behind, his chest heaving as the weight of the situation threatened to crush him. He was trapped between two worlds—the life he had built with Clara and the dark entanglement he had foolishly entered with Victoria.

Clara was wheeled through heavy double doors into the emergency trauma bay, leaving Daniel stranded in the hallway. He sank into a hard plastic chair, burying his face in his hands. The blood on his light blue shirt had dried into a stiff, dark crust, a constant reminder of the horrific scene in the parking lot. Every tick of the wall clock seemed to amplify the guilt pounding in his temples.

Footsteps echoed sharply down the corridor. Victoria appeared around the corner, having parked the SUV and made her way inside. She had removed her black blazer, revealing a silk blouse that clung damply to her skin. Her blonde hair was still neatly arranged, a stark contrast to the chaotic emotional storm raging inside her. She sat down in the chair adjacent to Daniel, keeping a careful, calculated distance.

"We need to get our stories straight," Victoria whispered, her voice barely above a murmur, her eyes darting nervously toward the nurses' station down the hall.

Daniel slowly raised his head, staring at her with hollow eyes. "Stories? Victoria, she was carrying my child. And you drove straight at her. You said it was just going to be a scare—a way to make her back off."

"Keep your voice down," Victoria hissed, her fingers digging into the armrest. "I didn't mean to actually hit her. The brakes... the brakes slipped. You know how old that SUV is."

Daniel let out a dry, humorless laugh that sounded more like a sob. "Slipped? You aimed at her to frighten her into signing the papers, and now she’s fighting for her life in there."
