Chapter 13: The Defense Fails

When it was Victoria Hayes’s turn to take the stand in her own defense, the atmosphere in the courtroom shifted to one of intense scrutiny. She carried herself with practiced elegance, smoothing her charcoal suit skirt as she sat down in the witness box. Her testimony was measured, delivered in a cool, articulate tone designed to project innocence and reasonableness.

"I had no intention of harming anyone that afternoon," Victoria testified, looking directly at the jury members to forge a personal connection. "The vehicle had a history of transmission hesitation. When Ms. Miller stepped into the path of the SUV, I panicked. I hit the pedal instead of the brake. It was a horrific driving error, nothing more."

The prosecutor stepped forward, holding a printed copy of the forensic report. "Ms. Hayes, you claim you hit the gas instead of the brake in a panic?"

"Yes, that is correct," Victoria replied evenly.

"Strange, then, that the event data recorder shows the throttle maintained at one hundred percent for four consecutive seconds prior to impact, with zero activation of the brake pedal," the prosecutor countered, stepping closer. "That isn't a momentary slip of the foot, Ms. Hayes. That is sustained, deliberate acceleration aimed directly at a pedestrian in a clearly marked crosswalk."

Victoria hesitated for a split second, her composure faltering as the digital evidence flashed on the screens behind her. "The software... the diagnostic system on those older models is notoriously unreliable," she stammered, losing her smooth rhythm for the first time.

"Are you suggesting the car hacked itself to frame you?" the prosecutor asked pointedly, drawing a murmur from the gallery.

Judge Sterling banged his gavel once. "Order in the court. Answer the question, Ms. Hayes."

Victoria sat in silence, trapped by the digital footprint of her own malice. The jury watched her carefully, the illusion of her pristine corporate innocence completely shattering before their eyes.
