Chapter 1: The Impact

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the cracked asphalt of the medical center’s overflow parking lot. Clara’s breath came in ragged, shallow gasps as the heavy silhouette of the black SUV loomed before her. She had barely enough time to thrust her hand forward and scream for the vehicle to halt before the heavy bumper struck her. The impact was sickeningly dull, a low thud of metal meeting flesh that knocked the wind completely out of her lungs.

Clara’s red hair, tied back in a practical knot, whipped across her face as she pitched forward. The light blue dress she wore, chosen for its comfort during her final trimester, instantly scuffed against the gritty pavement. As she hit the ground, a wave of white-hot agony tore through her lower abdomen. She curled inward, instinctively wrapping her trembling hands around her swollen stomach, fighting a rising tide of panic.

A few feet away, the driver’s side door of the SUV swung open with a sharp click. Victoria stumbled out, her crisp black double-breasted blazer stark against the blinding sunlight, her white pants immaculate. Her blonde hair fell loosely around a face frozen in absolute, unadulterated shock. Victoria stared at Clara’s crumpled form, her hands hovering uselessly near her mouth as if she could push back the horror of what had just occurred.

Clara lay shivering on the rough ground, tears blurring her vision as the asphalt radiated a punishing heat. She forced her eyes upward, meeting Victoria’s paralyzed gaze. The betrayal burning in Clara’s chest eclipsed even the physical torment. With every ounce of breath left in her fragile frame, she choked out the accusation that hung heavily in the air: "It was an accident! You aimed at me!"

Before Victoria could find her voice, the passenger side door of the SUV flew open. Daniel, wearing his familiar light blue button-down shirt and black pants, bolted across the pavement. His face was twisted in sheer terror as he rushed to Clara’s side, dropping to his knees. Clara clutched at his sleeve, her voice cracking with desperate urgency as she whispered his name, begging him to understand the nightmare unfolding before them.
