Chapter 12: The Turning Point

The courtroom was pin-drop silent as Daniel Vance took the witness stand. He walked slowly, looking every bit of a broken man, and took the oath in a low, trembling voice. He wore a plain blue shirt, devoid of any corporate branding, looking entirely stripped of his former status.

The prosecutor stepped up to the podium. "Mr. Vance, please tell the court what happened on the afternoon of November 14th in the medical center parking lot."

Daniel swallowed hard, glancing briefly toward the defense table where Victoria glared at him with undisguised venom. "It was a setup," Daniel confessed, his voice echoing clearly through the microphone. "Victoria and I plotted to scare Clara into signing the property settlement. We needed her out of the way to secure the corporate merger."

"And who was driving the vehicle at the time of the impact?" the prosecutor pressed.

"Victoria," Daniel answered, his voice cracking slightly. "I was waiting inside the building, but Victoria took the SUV. She called me moments before, saying she was going to teach Clara a lesson she wouldn't forget. When I heard the crash, I ran outside and saw... I saw what she had done."

Victoria’s defense attorney stood up abruptly. "Objection, Your Honor! The witness is offering speculative testimony designed to shift sole blame away from his own complicity."

"Overruled," Judge Sterling stated firmly. "The witness is testifying as a co-defendant under a plea agreement. Continue, Mr. Vance."

Clara watched Daniel from the front row. There was no satisfaction in watching him break down on the stand, only a profound sadness for how easily human beings could corrupt their own souls for wealth and power. Victoria’s face remained a mask of fury, realizing that her former partner had effectively signed her legal death warrant.
