The jury deliberated for less than four hours before sending a note to the judge indicating they had reached a unanimous verdict. The courtroom filled rapidly as word spread through the corridors, drawing reporters and onlookers eager to hear the conclusion of the high-profile trial.
Clara sat in her usual seat in the front row, her hands folded quietly in her lap. She felt surprisingly calm, anchored by the reality of what she had survived and the strength she had rediscovered along the way. Across the room, Victoria sat rigidly, her knuckles white as she gripped the table, while Daniel stared down at the floor, awaiting his inevitable fate.
Judge Sterling entered the room, his expression grave. "Has the jury reached a verdict?"
The foreperson stood up, holding a white envelope. "We have, Your Honor."
The clerk retrieved the document and handed it up to the judge, who scanned the pages briefly before looking out over the silent courtroom.
"In the case of the State versus Victoria Hayes, on the count of attempted murder in the first degree, how do you find?" Judge Sterling read.
"Guilty, Your Honor," the foreperson replied clearly.
