Chapter 7: A Debt to the Law

Before Claire could plead any further, a soft set of footsteps padded down the wooden staircase.
Leo stood at the landing, wearing his flannel pajamas and clutching a plush bear. He looked at Claire, his small face showing neither anger nor fear, only a profound, heartbreaking curiosity.
"Claire?" Leo asked quietly. "Are you sad because you did a bad thing?"
Claire froze. She looked up at the little boy she had read bedtime stories to just weeks prior—stories meant to earn his trust so she could wander the Vance estate unchallenged. A deep, burning wave of shame swept across her face.

Claire buried her face in her hands and wept bitterly. For the first time, her tears were not about the loss of status, wealth, or power. They were the agonizing tears of someone confronting their own moral bankruptcy through the mirror of pure innocence.
Julian walked over to the landline phone on the hall table and dialed the regional authorities. He gave the local sheriff their address and reported Claire's presence calmly.
He then looked down at Claire. "You want redemption, Claire? Don't run. Don't hide behind high-priced attorneys. Go back to the city, hand over your father's real records to the investigators, and accept whatever sentence comes with your choices."

Twenty minutes later, two squad cars arrived quietly. Claire walked out into the rain without resistance, ready to face the consequences she had spent a lifetime avoiding.
