Chapter 3: The Cold Walkout

"You used my grief," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that pierced Claire’s chest. "You walked into my life three months after my sister died. You pretended to love Leo. You built a fantasy of a warm home just to gain access to my vault."
"No! I do care about you!" Claire wept, genuine terror surfacing now as she realized what she was losing. "Julian, we can fix this. The wedding doesn't have to stop!"
Julian turned his back on her. He looked out at the two hundred guests who sat captivated by the scandalous scene unfolding before them.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian announced clearly into the altar microphone. "The wedding is canceled. Please enjoy the reception dinner on my tab. Security will see the Sterling family to the exit."
A chorus of shocked exclamations erupted. Arthur Sterling rushed forward, shouting threats of lawsuits and ruined reputations, but Marcus and two armed guards firmly intercepted him, guiding the patriarch and a weeping Claire toward the side corridor.
Julian knelt down on one knee in front of Leo. He gently adjusted the boy’s suspenders.
"You were very brave, buddy," Julian whispered, his stern face softening with immense gratitude.
"Did I do something wrong, Uncle Julian?" Leo asked, his eyes wide and uncertain. "Everyone looks mad."
"No, Leo," Julian said, lifting the boy into his arms. "You did everything right. You saved us."

Julian nodded to Clara, who stood waiting with tearful relief. "Pack our bags, Clara. We’re leaving town tonight. The lake house."
As they exited through the private vestry, Julian took off his black bow tie and tossed it onto the marble floor. The empire he built was safe, but the illusion of his future was shattered.
