Chapter 2: The Unraveling

Julian held the silver drive up toward the light. The room held its collective breath.

"What is that?" Julian asked, his voice deceptively soft, locking his gaze onto Claire.

"I have no idea!" Claire laughed, a high-pitched, nervous sound. "Julian, this is absurd. Our guests are waiting. The minister is waiting. Are you really going to humiliate me and ruin the most important day of our lives over a toy found by a toddler?"

"Leo doesn't play with flash drives," Julian replied evenly.

He signaled toward the back of the room. Marcus, his chief head of security, stepped briskly forward carrying a sleek slate-gray tablet. Julian handed him the drive without breaking eye contact with his bride.

"Julian, please!" Claire’s father, Arthur Sterling, suddenly rose from the second row, adjusting his cummerbund with an indignant huff. "This is an outrage! You’re insulting my daughter and my family's honor. We agreed on this union in good faith!"

"Good faith, Arthur?" Julian tilted his head. "Let’s verify that faith right now."

Marcus plugged the drive into the tablet. His eyes widened slightly as the directory scanned. He leaned toward Julian and whispered, "Encrypted scans of the maritime trade contracts. Financial projections for the harbor acquisition. And... wire transfer authorizations."

The ambient temperature in the room plummeted. Julian looked down at Claire, whose perfect bridal veneer was crumbling by the second. The trembling in her lower lip was no longer romantic anticipation—it was absolute panic.

"Is there an explanation for this, Claire?" Julian asked.

"Julian... listen to me," she stammered, taking a cautious step closer, trying to place a hand on his lapel. "My father... our family firm was drowning. We were facing bankruptcy. I... I had to find a way to save our legacy."

Julian gently peeled her fingers off his jacket. "By stealing mine?"
