Chapter 10: The Unseen Neighbor

A month before summer vacation began, a small community art center opened in the nearby town of Saranac Lake. Leo had developed a deep passion for watercolor painting, inspired by the serene landscapes surrounding their home.
Every Tuesday afternoon, Julian accompanied Leo to the studio, sitting in the back corner with a book while Leo painted vibrant lakes and green mountains.
The art teacher was a quiet, warm-hearted woman named Maya Lin. Unlike the socialites Julian had spent his adult life dodging, Maya had an unassuming grace. She wore paint-stained denim aprons, listened attentively to every child, and possessed a laugh that filled the bright studio with light.
During the third week of class, Leo accidentally knocked over a heavy jar of rinse water, sending a gray puddle splashing across Maya’s table and shoes.
"I'm so sorry!" Leo gasped, his eyes widening in panic as he braced for an angry reaction.
Julian sprang out of his chair to help, but Maya was already kneeling down at Leo’s eye level, smiling warmly.
"Hey, it's just water, Leo," Maya said gently, handing him a clean rag. "Mistakes are just part of the process. In art—and in life—messes can always be cleaned up. Let's wipe it together, okay?"

Leo let out a breath of pure relief and began wiping the floor with her.
Watching from a few feet away, Julian felt something long dormant stir in his chest. Maya didn't treat Leo like an heir to a fortune or a burden to be managed; she treated him with patient, authentic humanity.
