Chapter 11: Colors of Honesty

As the weeks passed, Julian found himself looking forward to Tuesday afternoons more than any boardroom meeting he had ever attended.
After one particular class, Leo proudly presented Julian with a canvas covered in rich blues and emerald greens. In the center of the lake was a small wooden dock with two stick figures standing side by side.
"That's you and me, Uncle Julian," Leo explained, beaming. "And the water is clear so you can see all the way to the bottom."
Maya walked over, wiping her hands on a towel. "He told me today that clear water means nobody is hiding anything underneath."
Julian looked up into Maya’s kind, observant hazel eyes. "He's wiser than most adults I know."
"Children have an instinctive radar for authenticity," Maya replied thoughtfully. "They don't care about what we possess; they only care about whether our words match our actions."
Julian smiled softly. "I learned that lesson the hard way not too long ago."
"I know who you are, Julian," Maya said quietly, without a hint of pretension or judgment. "Everyone in town reads the papers. But out here, nobody cares about the corporate drama. We only see a father doing everything he can to raise a good boy."
The word father resonated deep within Julian's soul. For months, he had viewed himself merely as a guardian trying to make amends. But hearing Maya say it made him realize the profound bond he and Leo had forged out of the ashes of betrayal.

"Would you... like to get coffee with us sometime, Maya?" Julian asked, feeling an unexpected flutter of nervous anticipation.
Maya smiled warmly. "I'd love that."
