Chapter 5: Shadows on the Perimeter

By the end of the week, the crisp autumn chill deepened. Julian had settled into a steady routine: cooking breakfast with Leo, taking afternoon walks along the pine trails, and keeping his phone turned off during the evening.
For the first time since his sister Elena passed away, Julian felt connected to the boy he had promised to protect.
However, the peace was shattered on a rainy Thursday night.
Julian was reading Leo a bedtime story when the estate’s perimeter alarms pinged softly on his smartwatch. He paused, keeping his voice steady as he finished the sentence and tucked the boy under the heavy duvet.
"Stay here and rest, Leo. I’ll be back in a minute to check the fire," Julian said quietly.
He walked down the staircase into the dimly lit foyer, where Marcus was already waiting near the front door, his hand resting inside his coat.
"Security cameras caught a vehicle parked at the main gate, Mr. Vance," Marcus reported in a low tone. "A lone figure walked past the tree line on foot. It’s Claire."
Julian frowned. "She drove four hours in this storm?"
"She bypassed her court-ordered travel restrictions to come here. Do you want me to call the local sheriff?"
Julian stared through the frosted glass panel beside the front door. Through the downpour, he could see a soaked, shivering silhouette standing beneath the porch lantern. Gone was the immaculate heiress in silk and diamonds; standing outside was a desperate woman clinging to the ruins of her former life.

"No," Julian said after a long breath. "Let her in. But stay close."
Marcus opened the heavy oak door. Claire stumbled into the warm foyer, drenched, pale, and trembling uncontrollably.
