Chapter 3 - The Leather Journal

Julian withdrew the worn leather journal slowly, holding it up like a shield between himself and Isabella. The gold-embossed initials on the cover caught the harsh light of the chandelier, glinting with an ominous familiarity that made Isabella’s breath catch in her throat. It was her late father’s private ledger, the very item she had spent the last three years searching for across three different continents.

“You think this dress and a medical brace give you power?” Julian asked, a bitter, humorless smile touching the corners of his trimmed beard. “You think exposing a scar makes you the victim here? Your father left instructions in this exact book, Isabella. And those instructions state that the entire estate passes directly to me the moment you attempt to publicize our family’s private medical history.”

Evelyn let out a sharp sigh of relief, straightening her dark green blouse with trembling fingers as her confidence rushed back into her eyes. “Listen to him, Isabella,” Evelyn urged, stepping closer to reclaim her authority. “Your father wanted to protect this family’s legacy above all else. He knew you were unstable after the accident. That brace you’re wearing is proof of your institutionalization, not our guilt.”

Isabella didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, calculated smile formed on her lips as she reached behind her back once more, her fingers finding the small interior pocket she had sewn into the lining of the medical brace that very morning. “My father never wrote a single instruction giving you control over anything, Julian. Because the day before he died, he changed his will in the presence of an independent notary.”

Chloe gasped, turning her head rapidly between Isabella and her mother. “Wait… mother, is that true? Did you forge the revocation papers too?”

“Shut up, Chloe!” Evelyn snapped, losing her composure entirely as a blotchy red flush crept up her neck. “You don't know anything about business, about what it took to keep this company afloat while your father was losing his mind to dementia.”

“He wasn't losing his mind, Evelyn. He was being poisoned,” Isabella declared, pulling a folded, yellowed document from her brace pocket and holding it high above her head for the entire room to see. “And the toxicology report is right here in my hand.”
