Chapter 11 - The Contingency Protocol

The federal prosecutor’s office on the twentieth floor of the federal building was dead quiet, save for the hum of the air conditioning unit and the frantic clacking of a keyboard as Walter Vance hammered away at his terminal. Isabella stood behind him, her hands resting on the back of his leather chair, her eyes glued to the scrolling streams of encrypted financial data filling the monitor.

“He wasn't bluffing,” Walter muttered, his fingers flying across the keys as a red warning banner flashed across the screen. “The dead-man’s switch is real. If the system detects his primary accounts remaining frozen past midnight tonight, an automated script will dump sixty gigabytes of encrypted offshore transactions onto every major news wire in the country.”

“What happens if the files drop?” Isabella asked, her voice dangerously calm as she watched the countdown timer tick down from eight hours.

“Half the city’s municipal government, three federal judges, and two major banking institutions go down in flames alongside Julian,” Walter replied, spinning his chair around to face her. “It’s a scorched-earth policy. He’d rather burn the entire financial district to ash than spend twenty years in a federal penitentiary.”

The office door burst open, and Detective Marcus Vance strode in, holding a heavy cardboard box filled with physical ledgers seized from Julian’s downtown penthouse. “We searched his private study,” Marcus said, dropping the box onto the heavy oak conference table with a dull thud. “We didn't find a computer server, but we found this.”

Marcus pulled out a heavy, leather-bound journal—the exact twin of the one Julian had brandished at the wedding reception—and dropped it onto the glass table. Isabella stepped forward, picking up the ledger and flipping directly to the back page. There, written in her late father’s trembling, uneven handwriting, was a series of alphanumeric recovery keys.

“My father anticipated this exact scenario,” Isabella whispered, tracing the ink with her thumb. “He knew Julian was building a dead-man’s switch years ago.”

“Those keys are encrypted with a biometric signature, Isabella,” Walter warned, standing up to peer over her shoulder. “We need a living biometric match from either your father or someone with direct genetic authorization to bypass the firewall without triggering the auto-destruct protocol.”

Isabella looked up from the ledger, her dark eyes locking onto the federal prosecutor with absolute, unyielding determination. “My father is sitting in the lobby downstairs. And I am wearing the exact medical brace that holds the cryptographic decryption key sewn into the inner lining.”

Marcus Vance raised an eyebrow. “You had the decryption key sewn into your wedding dress brace?”

“I didn't trust a single person in this city,” Isabella replied simply, reaching behind her back to locate the hidden seam of the canvas garment. “Not even myself, until the truth was absolute.”
