Chapter 14 - The Unraveling Thread

The federal courtroom was packed to absolute capacity, the gallery filled with journalists, corporate board members, and financial investigators murmuring quietly among themselves as Judge Thomas presiding over the final sentencing of Julian St. Clair and Evelyn Vance.

Evelyn sat at the defense table, dressed in a plain grey jumpsuit, her head bowed low, refusing to meet the eyes of anyone in the room. Julian sat beside her, his tailored tuxedo replaced by standard inmate orange, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscle twitched rhythmically under his trimmed beard.

Judge Thomas adjusted his spectacles, looking down from his elevated mahogany bench with a grave, unblinking expression. “The financial devastation wrought by the defendants over the past five years represents one of the most calculated corporate frauds in this state's history,” Judge Thomas stated, his voice echoing clearly through the vaulted chamber. “Through forgery, intimidation, and premeditated poisoning, you systematically sought to dismantle a legacy built on legitimate enterprise.”

Isabella sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing her sharp charcoal suit, holding a single, polished pearl button between her thumb and forefinger. She didn't blink as the judge read the final verdicts.

“Julian Vance, for the charges of grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit murder, I sentence you to forty years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.”

A sharp gasp rippled through the gallery. Julian slammed both hands onto the defense table, attempting to stand up and shout, but two federal marshals forced him back down into his chair instantly, their hands heavy on his shoulders.

“Evelyn St. Clair, in light of your cooperation and testimony regarding the falsification of medical and probate records, I sentence you to fifteen years in federal prison,” Judge Thomas continued, his tone unwavering.

Evelyn didn't move, her hands remaining folded in her lap as silent tears finally slipped down her cheeks—not tears of manipulation, but the crushing weight of absolute, irreversible defeat.

As the marshals hauled Julian away toward the heavy oak exit doors, he twisted his neck around, casting one final, venomous glare toward Isabella in the front row. “You’ll never run that company alone, Isabella! Without me, the board will tear you apart within a month!”

Isabella stood up slowly from her seat in the gallery, her dark eyes meeting his with absolute, chilling serenity. She didn't say a single word in response. She simply opened her hand, letting the single pearl button drop onto the polished wooden floor, where it rolled a few inches before coming to a complete, permanent stop.
