Chapter 2 - Beneath the Silk

The sudden tightening of Julian’s fingers around Isabella’s wrist sent a sharp pain radiating up her forearm, but she refused to pull away. The ballroom air grew suffocatingly thin, every eye in the room pinned to the exact spot where the heavy bridal silk parted slightly to reveal a faded, jagged scar stretching horizontally across her left shoulder blade.

“Let go of me, Julian,” Isabella whispered, her voice lacking any trace of warmth. “Unless you want everyone here to see the kind of man who holds a knife to his fiancée’s back just hours before they exchange vows.”

Julian released her instantly as if he had been burned, stumbling backward half a step while his chest heaved beneath his black tuxedo jacket. His stern expression cracked, revealing a deep, desperate panic beneath the polished veneer. “That scar has nothing to do with what happened tonight,” he muttered defensively, glancing anxiously at the cluster of prominent business partners and family members standing frozen near the entrance.

Evelyn hurried over, her dark green blouse rustling sharply as she placed a trembling hand on Julian’s arm to steady him. “Calm down, Julian,” Evelyn urged, her voice dropping to a frantic whisper. “We handle this privately. Not in front of the board members, not in front of the press.”

“There is no privacy left, Evelyn,” Isabella said firmly, sliding her zipper down another three inches. The heavy white fabric began to fold away from her torso, revealing the stark, intricate design of a second, hidden garment underneath. It was not lingerie, nor was it a slip; it was a tightly laced canvas medical brace, stamped with official state forensic identification numbers.

Chloe dropped her hands from her mouth, her voice trembling as she pointed a shaky finger at the brace. “Is that… Is that the evidence from the night of the fire?” Chloe choked out, taking a panicked step backward. “The police closed that case five years ago. They said it was an accident.”

“The police closed it because Evelyn paid a detective thirty thousand dollars to lose the report,” Isabella stated, her eyes locking directly onto Evelyn’s pale, sweat-beaten face. “Isn’t that right, Mother?”

Evelyn stepped back as if struck across the face, her lips parting soundlessly. The silence in the room stretched to an unbearable breaking point as every guest realized the wedding reception had just transformed into a public tribunal.

Julian reached inside his tuxedo jacket, his hand moving with a sudden, suspicious swiftness toward his inner pocket. “Don't move another inch,” Julian warned, his voice turning ice-cold as his fingers curled around a small, dark leather notebook.
