Chapter 1 - The Unbuttoning

The grand ballroom of the St. Clair Hotel fell into a deafening, unnatural silence, broken only by the sharp, metallic click of a tiny pearl button giving way. Isabella stood facing away from the tiered crystal chandelier, her dark hair pinned neatly with sparkling clips, her fingers methodically working down the intricate row of fabric loops lining the sheer spine of her wedding gown.
Julian stepped forward, his tall frame rigid inside the classic black tuxedo. His neatly trimmed beard twitched as his jaw clenched into a hard line. “Isabella, stop this madness right now,” he demanded, his voice dropping an octave as he closed the distance between them. “Everyone is watching us. Turn around and fix your dress.”
“Let them watch, Julian,” Isabella replied, her voice steady and chillingly calm as another button popped open, exposing the pale skin of her upper spine. “They have spent the entire evening celebrating a lie built on stolen foundations. It is time the foundation was laid bare for every single guest to inspect.”
Evelyn, standing near the mahogany sweetheart table in her dark green high-neck blouse, wrung her hands until her knuckles turned ghostly white. Her chest heaved with anxious, shallow breaths. “Isabella, stop! Don't open that dress,” Evelyn pleaded, her voice cracking with unmistakable panic. “You are destroying everything we spent a decade protecting. Think of the consequences this will bring upon us all.”
Chloe dropped her champagne flute, the crystal shattering against the imported marble floor with a sharp crack that made several guests flinch. The younger woman in the gold silk dress slapped both hands over her mouth, her eyes wide with undisguised terror as she stared at Isabella’s exposed back.
“You care about consequences, Evelyn? Where were the consequences when you forged my signature on the trust documents?” Isabella asked, sliding her hand lower down the zipper of the heavy gown, dragging the metal slide downward with a deliberate, agonizing slowness that sent a fresh wave of gasps rippling through the ballroom.
Julian lunged forward, grabbing Isabella’s wrist with a crushing grip to halt her hand. “You don't know what you are doing,” he hissed into her ear, his face inches from hers.

Isabella turned her head slightly, meeting his terrified gaze without flinching. “I know exactly what is underneath this fabric, Julian. And so do you.”
