Chapter 9

The federal courthouse on Foley Square was a monolith of gray limestone and solemn tradition. At 11:45 AM, Julian pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of Courtroom 302, flanked by Marcus and Sarah Jenkins, who kept her head bowed beneath a wide-brimmed hat. The room was already buzzing with quiet anticipation. Elena sat at the opposing counsel’s table, impeccably dressed in a charcoal designer suit, her blonde hair pulled back into a severe chignon. Beside her sat two high-priced corporate attorneys, surrounded by neat stacks of binders.

When Elena saw Julian walk in with Sarah Jenkins, the color instantly drained from her carefully contoured face. Her eyes flashed with sudden, blinding panic before she masked her expression with a brittle, professional smirk.

Judge Holloway, a stern man with silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses, looked up from his bench, tapping his gavel once to restore order.

"Mr. Vance, your motion for continuance was granted until noon," Judge Holloway said, his voice echoing off the high ceiling. "I trust you are ready to address the emergency probate injunction regarding the estate property."

"We are, Your Honor," Julian said, stepping forward to the podium. "We move to dismiss the plaintiff’s petition on the grounds of fraudulent documentation, material misrepresentation, and perjury."

Elena’s lead counsel leaped to his feet. "Objection, Your Honor! This is a baseless accusation designed to stall legitimate probate proceedings."

"Overruled, counsel," Judge Holloway replied smoothly. "Let Mr. Vance present his evidence."

Julian turned and gestured toward the gallery. "Your Honor, the defense calls Ms. Sarah Jenkins, former executive secretary and corporate records administrator for Vanguard Holdings."

A ripple of astonishment swept through the courtroom. Elena’s attorney turned around sharply, staring at Sarah as she walked up to the witness stand with trembling steps. After being sworn in, Sarah took her seat, adjusted the microphone, and looked directly at the judge.

For the next twenty minutes, Sarah dismantled Elena’s case brick by brick. She detailed the fraudulent wire transfers, the fabricated proxy signatures from Malta, and the custom notary seal ordered from Zurich specifically to manufacture a fake claim over the Vance family estate. She spoke clearly, her initial fear giving way to a quiet, undeniable courage as she presented digital backups and email logs that implicated Elena directly in the scheme.

Elena sat frozen at her table, her fingers digging into the edge of the mahogany surface so hard her knuckles turned white. Her attorneys whispered frantically beside her, but there was no saving the case.

Judge Holloway leaned forward over his bench, resting his chin on his hands, his stern gaze fixing on Elena. "Mrs. Vance, do you have any response to these allegations before I hold you in contempt of court?"
