Chapter 6

Three days of deceptive calm passed over the Vance estate. The autumn leaves outside turned from vibrant amber to a brittle brown, carpeting the expansive lawns in a rustling quilt. Inside, Julian worked tirelessly from his study, coordinating with Marcus to dismantle Elena’s corporate network piece by piece. They discovered that Vanguard Holdings was not merely bleeding capital; it was built on a foundation of fraudulent asset inflation, using fictitious overseas holdings to secure high-risk loans. If the SEC caught wind of it, Elena would face criminal prosecution, not just civil litigation.

Leo and Toby had slowly returned to their normal routines, attending their private day school in the village and spending afternoons playing soccer on the back lawn under Clara’s watchful eye. Julian made it a point to be present for every meal, sitting at the head of the long mahogany dining table, listening to Leo talk about his high school robotics club and watching Toby proudly show off a drawing he had made in art class.

Yet, Julian could not shake the feeling of an impending trap. Elena was too proud, too calculating to retreat after a single defeat.

On a crisp Thursday afternoon, Marcus arrived unannounced, his briefcase bulging with fresh documents. Julian met him in the conservatory, where the afternoon sun filtered through the tall glass panes, illuminating the potted ferns and orchids.

"It's worse than we thought," Marcus said without a greeting, sliding a thick financial audit across the glass-topped table. "Elena hasn't just been inflating assets. She’s been liquidating her personal estate to fund a private legal assault against you—not through family court, but through an obscure probate loophole involving your late mother’s trust."

Julian frowned, flipping open the folder. "My mother’s trust was settled ten years ago. Everything was left to me and my brother."

"Not according to an amended codicil filed three days ago in the Cayman Islands," Marcus pointed out, tapping a notarized signature at the bottom of a foreign document. "It appears Elena managed to secure a proxy signature from your uncle Arthur’s estranged stepdaughter—the one who died in Malta last year. She’s claiming that a portion of this property actually belongs to a subsidiary corporation controlled by Vanguard."

Julian stared at the page, a cold fury rising in his chest. "She’s trying to take the house out from under us. She wants to render the boys homeless."

"Worse. If she successfully clouds the title of this estate, the court can appoint a neutral receiver to manage the property pending litigation. That means court-appointed monitors inside your home twenty-four hours a day. Your privacy—and the boys' safety—would be completely compromised."

Julian stood up, walking over to the glass doors and looking out toward the lawn where Leo and Toby were laughing as they chased the family retriever. "Not on my watch. When is the injunction hearing?"

"Tomorrow morning at nine sharp before Judge Holloway," Marcus replied quietly. "And Julian... Holloway is known for favoring corporate real estate interests. We need a smoking gun, or we lose the house."
