Chapter 5

The return drive to the estate was bathed in the pale, hesitant light of dawn. Inside the spacious cabin of the SUV, the atmosphere was thick with a mixture of relief and lingering adrenaline. Leo sat in the back seat, leaning against the window, watching the rain streak down the glass as the city skyline faded into the distance. Julian kept his eyes on the road, one hand resting on the center console while the other gripped the steering wheel with white-knuckled intensity.

When they pulled through the wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate, Clara was already waiting on the front steps, holding an umbrella against the drizzle. As soon as the car stopped, the front door swung open, and eight-year-old Toby came barreling down the steps, ignoring the rain entirely. He threw himself against the passenger door the moment Julian unlocked it.

"Leo!" Toby screamed, tears of joy streaming down his face as his older brother stepped out of the vehicle.

Leo dropped his duffel bag and caught Toby in a tight, awkward embrace, lifting the younger boy off the ground for a brief second before they both tumbled onto the gravel driveway, laughing and crying at the same time. Julian stood nearby, watching them with a profound sense of peace settling over his tired mind. For the first time in months, his family was under one roof, protected by walls of stone and the unyielding devotion of a father.

Clara approached Julian, handing him a clean handkerchief. "You look like you haven't slept in a week, Mr. Vance."

"I slept enough on the plane, Clara," Julian lied smoothly, though his bloodshot eyes betrayed him. "Get the boys inside. Make them some breakfast. I need to make a phone call."

Julian walked back to his study, closing the heavy wooden door behind him. He dialed a direct number he hadn't used in three years—Elena’s private line. It rang twice before she picked up, her voice instantly sharp and devoid of warmth.

"You think you're clever, Julian, don't you?" Elena hissed through the speaker. "Pulling stunt work at an airfield like a second-rate criminal."

Julian spoke in a voice so cold and quiet that it made the receiver seem to freeze in his hand. "Listen to me very carefully, Elena. The boys are home. My lawyers have frozen your trust accounts, and Judge Vance has issued a restraining order that keeps you fifty miles away from this property. If you ever try to pull my children into your corporate schemes again, I won't just ruin your finances. I will strip away every last vestige of your public reputation until there is nothing left of your precious social standing. Do you understand me?"

A long silence hung on the line, broken only by the faint static of an international connection. Then, the line went dead. Julian lowered the phone, his jaw set. The battle was far from over, but the first war had been won.
