Chapter 12

Julian tightened his grip on the phone, his blue eyes narrowing as he watched Leo block a shot from Toby on the lawn. "If you want to talk about custody, speak to my lawyers. You lost any right to negotiate directly after you tried to forge a probate claim and manipulate a federal court."
"I don't want to fight anymore, Julian," Elena whispered, and for the first time in years, she sounded genuinely tired. "The board ousted me this morning. The SEC has seized the accounts. I'm facing criminal indictment, and my attorneys have all abandoned ship. I have nothing left."
Julian remained silent, letting her words hang in the autumn air. He felt no pity—only a profound, detached closure.
"I'm leaving the country," Elena continued, her voice trembling slightly. "I’m flying to Geneva tonight. I won't contest the permanent custody agreement. You and Marcus can draw up the papers relinquishing all my parental rights, and I will sign them without a fight. The boys... they're better off with you anyway. I was never a mother to them. I only saw them as extensions of my own ambition."
Julian absorbed the confession. It was brutally honest, the closest thing to an apology he would ever receive from her.
"Sign the papers, Elena," Julian said quietly. "Mail them to Marcus's office. Once they're filed and approved by the family court, you won't ever have to worry about this family again. And we won't look for you."
"Goodbye, Julian," she whispered before the line went dead with a soft click.
Julian lowered the phone, staring down at the screen as the dark display reflected his own calm, resolute expression. He didn't feel a rush of triumph or vindication; he only felt a profound sense of weight lifting from his shoulders. The ghost that had haunted their marriage, their home, and their lives for years had finally vanished into the ether.
He stood up from the patio chair and walked out onto the lawn where the boys were playing. Toby saw him coming and booted the soccer ball straight toward his shins. Julian laughed, trapping the ball effortlessly with his foot and passing it back to his youngest son.
"Who scored?" Julian asked, wiping a stray lock of dark hair from his forehead.
"I did!" Toby shouted triumphantly, jumping up and down in his yellow t-shirt. "Ten to eight!"
Leo walked over, wiping sweat from his brow, a relaxed, confident smile on his face. "He cheated, Dad. He moved the goalposts."

"Did not!" Toby protested playfully, sticking his tongue out at his older brother.
Julian pulled both of his sons close, wrapping an arm around each of their shoulders. "Come on, let's go inside. Clara made apple pie."
