Chapter 8

Sarah Jenkins stared at Julian through the narrow gap of the security chain, her breath coming in shallow, nervous gasps. The smell of baking bread drifted from the kitchen behind her, a domestic normalcy that seemed entirely out of place given the gravity of the moment.

"Mr. Vance... you shouldn't be here," Sarah whispered, her voice trembling. "Her lawyers... they watch my accounts. If they find out I spoke to you, they'll destroy everything I've built since I left that company."

"They're already destroying my family, Sarah," Julian said, his voice steady and persuasive, stripped of all arrogance. "She filed a fraudulent probate claim to seize my home—the house where my children were born, the house where my mother lived and died. She used a forged signature from Malta to do it. You and I both know she’s capable of forgery because you were the one who filed her corporate correspondence."

Sarah flinched as if struck. She looked down at her flour-stained apron, her fingers twisting the fabric into knots. "I didn't forge anything, Mr. Vance. I just... I saw the wire transfers. I saw the notary seal she had custom-made in Zurich. I knew what she was doing, and when I tried to resign, her chief counsel threatened to implicate me in the embezzlement scheme."

Julian stepped closer, his voice dropping to a low, earnest register. "If you come to court with me tomorrow morning in New York, my lawyers will secure full federal immunity for your testimony. You won't face charges. But if you stay here hiding behind this door, Elena wins, and innocent people pay the price for her greed."

Sarah looked up, tears welling in her eyes. For a long moment, the only sound was the distant hum of traffic on the nearby highway. She reached up with a trembling hand, slipped the brass security chain free from its latch, and pulled the door wide open.

"Come inside, Mr. Vance," she said quietly. "Let me get my coat."

Ten minutes later, Sarah was seated in the passenger seat of Julian’s sedan. They didn't speak as Julian maneuvered the car back onto the interstate, heading south toward New York City under the cover of a gathering dusk. The stakes were impossibly high, and every mile brought them closer to a courtroom showdown that would determine whether the Vance family would survive or be torn apart forever.

Back at the estate, Marcus had managed to stall Judge Holloway’s morning docket by filing an emergency motion for continuance, buying them until noon the following day. But Julian knew Elena’s legal team would not sit idle. They had deep pockets, corrupt connections, and an unyielding thirst for total victory. As the city lights of Manhattan began to pierce the evening haze, Julian gripped the steering wheel, knowing tomorrow would be the definitive test of everything he held dear.
