Chapter 3

The digital clock on the dashboard glowed 2:15 AM as Julian’s car pulled into the underground parking garage of downtown’s tallest financial skyscraper. The city outside was a blanket of cold, indifferent rain, but inside Marcus’s corner office on the forty-fifth floor, the lights were blazing. Marcus sat behind a massive glass desk, surrounded by printed transcripts, financial ledgers, and glowing computer monitors displaying corporate asset flows.

Julian walked in without knocking, shrugging off his wet overcoat and tossing it onto a leather armchair. He sat down opposite his lawyer, his blue eyes sharp despite the lack of sleep.

"Tell me you found a loophole in her injunction," Julian said without preamble.

Marcus sighed, removing his gold-rimmed glasses and pinching the bridge of his nose. "I found something better, Julian. But it’s risky. Elena isn't just fighting for custody because she misses her sons. Her new venture, Vanguard Holdings, is bleeding capital. She needs the boys listed as dependents on her offshore trust to secure a massive line of credit from European investors by the end of the quarter. If we prove financial exploitation, the family court judge has no choice but to freeze her access."

Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "And Leo? Where does he fit into her calculation?"

"Leo is her bargaining chip. She intends to send him to that Swiss boarding school because it removes him from your immediate influence and locks in the trust's educational disbursement clause. If he’s out of the country, she controls the narrative."

Julian felt a familiar spike of adrenaline rush through his veins. The realization that his eldest son was merely a line item on a corporate balance sheet made his blood run cold. "We need to get Leo back before sunrise. If she moves him across state lines to the private airstrip in Westchester, our jurisdiction gets messy."

"That’s why I brought you here," Marcus said, spinning a laptop around to face Julian. "Here is the flight manifest for a chartered Gulfstream filed under one of Elena’s shell companies. Departure time is 6:00 AM from Teterboro. If we can intercept Leo at the transition point with a court order signed by Judge Vance—his uncle, who happens to be on emergency rotation—we can bypass Elena’s injunction entirely."

Julian stared at the screen. His brother, Arthur, was a federal magistrate who rarely mixed family with law, but desperate times demanded desperate measures. "I’ll call Arthur right now. Have the paperwork ready."

Marcus nodded grimly. "Be careful, Julian. Elena knows you’re coming. She expects you to make a mistake."
