Chapter 8: The Breach at Midnight

The heavy oak front doors splintered inward, hanging by a single twisted hinge as heavily armed federal agents in tactical gear swarmed into the foyer. Flashlights cut blinding white beams through the gloom of the dining room, illuminating the floating dust motes, the shattered French doors, and the tense tableau of suspects standing among the broken glass.
“Federal agents! Nobody move! Drop your weapons!” a voice boomed through a megaphone from the hallway.
Sarah immediately dropped her revolver to the marble floor, raising her hands slowly above her head. The bodyguard holding Victor shoved him forward toward the advancing agents and bolted for the shattered garden doors, but two tactical officers intercepted him outside, tackling him into the flowerbed with a muffled grunt.
Eleanor didn't panic. She smoothed the front of her glittering sequin gown once more, adjusted her diamond necklace with cool precision, and turned to face the lead officer stepping into the dining room.
“I am Eleanor Vance,” she said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness and untouchable confidence. “You are making a massive mistake. I have diplomatic immunity through the consulate, and this house is currently under federal protection order 44-B.”
The lead officer, a stern-faced woman with iron-grey hair pulled back into a tight bun, ignored Eleanor entirely. Her sharp eyes scanned the room, bypassing the adults until they locked onto Clara, who was still standing frozen by the table with the yellowed manila folder at her feet.
“Clara?” the officer asked, her voice softening slightly as she holstered her sidearm and walked past Eleanor. “Are you alright, sweetheart?”
Clara blinked against the blinding glare of the tactical flashlights. “Who are you?”
“My name is Agent Hayes,” the woman replied, kneeling down to Clara’s eye level, ignoring the damp dress and the water still clinging to the girl’s hair. “I’ve been looking for you for five years. Your father left instructions that if anything ever happened to him, I was to bring you to the safehouse in Vermont.”
Victor raised his head slowly, a bitter, broken laugh escaping his lips. “Vermont? Agent Hayes, you think a safehouse in Vermont is going to protect her from what’s buried in the basement?”
Agent Hayes stood up, her expression hardening as she turned to face Victor. “We secured the basement ten minutes ago, Victor. We know about the vault. And we know what you found inside it last night.”

Victor went completely rigid. Before he could respond, Agent Hayes’s radio crackled to life with a frantic report from the basement detail.
“Commander Hayes, you need to see this now,” the radio hissed through static. “We found a second set of human remains behind the vault wall. And they aren't who we expected.”
