Chapter 3: The Gatekeeper’s Ghost

The shrill beeping of the security panel pierced the heavy atmosphere of the dining room, freezing everyone in place. Victor released Eleanor’s arm abruptly, stumbling back half a step as his eyes darted toward the hallway. The eastern gate was supposed to be impenetrable, coded specifically to his thumbprint and the estate manager's secure keycard. Yet, the flashing red light on the master display indicated that the heavy iron barrier had just been overridden from the outside.

“Check the perimeter,” Victor commanded the two bodyguards without taking his eyes off Eleanor.

The men in dark suits moved in unison, drawing small, non-lethal sidearms from their concealed holsters as they jogged toward the foyer. Eleanor smoothed the front of her sequin gown with trembling hands, though her composure was returning at an alarming rate. A cold, knowing smile played on her lips.

“You thought you could lock me out, Victor? You thought cutting off the bank accounts would stop the wheels from turning?” Eleanor laughed softly, a sound devoid of any real warmth. “Someone is coming for what’s inside this house. And it isn’t you.”

Clara stepped between them, her small frame trembling not from fear, but from a sudden surge of adrenaline. She looked at Eleanor, then at Victor, realizing for the first time that the adults guarding her were playing a high-stakes game of deception where she was merely a pawn.

“Who is at the gate?” Clara demanded, her voice carrying an authority that startled them both.

Victor looked down at the little girl, seeing a flash of the woman he had loved and lost a decade ago. He reached out to place a comforting hand on her shoulder, but Clara flinched away, refusing his touch. She had endured too many lies today.

“Stay behind me, Clara,” Victor ordered, drawing a small, polished brass key from his vest pocket—a key Clara had never seen before in her life.

As Victor turned toward the foyer to meet the intruder, the dining room lights flickered violently and died, plunging them into absolute darkness, save for the emergency red glow of the security panel. Through the sudden stillness, a slow, heavy footstep echoed from the dark hallway, accompanied by the raspy sound of a familiar voice calling out a name everyone thought was buried.
