Chapter 12: Echoes in the Iron Maze

The service stairwell was a narrow, vertical shaft of cold concrete and rusted iron that plunged deep into the bedrock beneath the mansion. The emergency lights flickered at irregular intervals along the low ceiling, casting long, twisting shadows that danced against the damp walls. Clara descended the metal steps first, her bare feet making soft, slapping sounds against the rungs. Agent Hayes followed closely behind with her tactical flashlight drawn, while Sarah and Victor brought up the rear in tense silence.

“Watch your step here,” Agent Hayes murmured, her voice bouncing off the concrete walls. “The humidity down here is high. The stairs are slick.”

Clara didn't answer. Her fingers were curled tightly around the heavy brass key in her pocket, while her other hand nervously brushed against the clasp of her pearl collar. The words Victor had spoken upstairs echoed in her mind: The code is hidden inside the pearl collar. She stopped abruptly on a landing halfway down the shaft, causing Agent Hayes to bump lightly into her back.

“What is it, Clara?” Hayes asked, lowering her flashlight beam to illuminate the girl’s face.

“My neck,” Clara whispered, her fingers frantically tracing the tiny engraved lines on the metal emblem of the necklace. “The clasp isn't just a clasp. It’s a mechanical dial.”

Sarah leaned in close, her eyes widening as she watched Clara’s small fingers twist the outer ring of the double-headed phoenix emblem. With a faint, satisfying click, a tiny micro-sd card slid out from a concealed compartment in the back of the clasp, dropping directly into Clara’s open palm.

“She had it right under our noses the whole time,” Sarah breathed, staring at the tiny piece of plastic.

Victor reached out a trembling hand, but Clara pulled away, tucking the micro-sd card securely into the pocket of her damp dress alongside the brass key.

“You knew it was there, didn't you, Victor?” Clara accused, turning to face him with eyes full of bitter betrayal. “You always knew what my parents left me.”

Victor opened his mouth to reply, but before a word could escape, a muffled explosion echoed from deep beneath the bedrock. The concrete stairs beneath their feet shuddered violently, sending a shower of dust and loose pebbles cascading down into the darkness below.

“They’ve breached the outer vault door!” Agent Hayes shouted, drawing her weapon and pushing past Clara. “Move! Move!”
