Chapter 13: The Outer Vault Door

The air grew thick and heavy with the smell of scorched metal and ozone as Agent Hayes led the frantic descent down the final flight of concrete stairs. The stairwell ended in a massive blast door made of reinforced steel, its electronic keypad hanging loose from the wall with exposed wires sparking blue and yellow against the dark wall. Smoke billowed from the seam of the heavy door, obscuring the hallway beyond.

Clara pushed past Hayes, coughing against the acrid smoke. Through the haze, she could see the silhouette of Eleanor standing before the inner vault control panel. Eleanor’s sequin gown was stained with soot, and her hair had come loose from its elegant updo, framing her face in wild, frantic strands. She was frantically typing a sequence of numbers into the emergency auxiliary pad, but the screen flashed a harsh red warning: ACCESS DENIED.

“Get away from the panel, Eleanor!” Hayes shouted, raising her weapon and aiming it directly at the woman’s back.

Eleanor spun around, her eyes wide and manic. In her right hand, she clutched the encrypted flash drive she had stolen upstairs. Her manicured fingernails were bleeding slightly where she had clawed at the melted casing of the auxiliary terminal.

“You’re too late!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing down the concrete corridor. “The data is already uploading to an external server! Once the transfer is complete, this entire estate—and every offshore account Victor hid—will be wiped clean!”

Victor burst through the doorway behind Hayes, coughing against the smoke. He took one look at the flashing red terminal and lunged forward. “Eleanor, you insane bitch! You’ll trigger the self-destruct protocol!”

Before Victor could reach her, Eleanor pressed a large, recessed red button at the base of the control panel. A loud mechanical groan reverberated through the bedrock, followed by a heavy, metallic thud as the inner vault door began to slide open, revealing a small, windowless chamber bathed in the harsh glow of emergency lights.

Inside the vault, sitting on a stainless-steel pedestal, was a small, dusty wooden box bearing the exact same double-headed phoenix crest engraved on Clara’s pearl collar.

Clara stepped forward, ignoring the armed agents and the shouting adults. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the micro-sd card and the heavy brass key, and walked straight past Eleanor toward the open vault.

“Don't touch it, Clara!” Sarah screamed, lunging forward. “It’s a trap!”
