Chapter 1: The Echo of a Frozen Command

The dining room chandelier cast cold, prismatic points of light across the crystalware, illuminating the small, trembling figure of Clara. Her beige dress clung damply to her chest, and strands of hair matted with water dripped down her pale forehead. Across the table, the glittering sequins of Eleanor’s evening gown rustled as she lowered the heavy crystal pitcher. The water had stopped flowing, but the shock of the act lingered in the oppressive air of the hall. Eleanor leaned inward, her breath ghosting against Clara’s ear, carrying the weight of a cruel ultimatum.

“Call me mom and it stops,” Eleanor whispered, her voice a low, melodic blade that cut through the silent tension of the room.

Clara raised a shaking, small hand, wiping the remaining water and tears from her stinging eyes. Her chest heaved with a mixture of fear and fierce defiance. She looked up, refusing to break under the gaze of the woman who ruled this estate with an iron fist wrapped in silk.

“You’re not my mother,” Clara spat back, her voice cracking with youthful indignation.

Before Eleanor could react to the defiance, heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor. Victor strode into the dining room, flanked by two towering bodyguards in dark suits. His face was a mask of rigid fury. Without a word of greeting, Victor crossed the remaining distance, his large hand wrapping forcefully around Eleanor’s bare arm, halting any further movement. Eleanor gasped, her eyes widening in sudden, uncharacteristic panic. Victor stared down into her eyes, his expression dark and unreadable.

“You said like her mother did,” Victor growled, his voice trembling with a suppressed rage that shook the crystal glasses on the table. “Tell me how you know.”

Eleanor tried to wrench her arm free, her diamonds catching the harsh light. “You have no idea what you’re meddling in, Victor.”

Victor gripped her tighter, leaning in close. “Try me.”
