Chapter 14: The Truth Inside the Wooden Box

Clara ignored Sarah’s warning. The heavy steel door of the vault hummed with a low, vibrating energy as the countdown timer on the main console ticked down silently from three minutes. The air inside the small chamber smelled of old paper, dust, and dried lavender. Clara stepped across the threshold, her bare feet leaving wet prints on the sterile concrete floor. She approached the stainless-steel pedestal where the dusty wooden box rested under a single spotlight.
The box was secured with a heavy brass padlock that matched the key clutched tightly in her right hand. With hands that barely trembled, Clara inserted the key into the rusted lock and turned it. The mechanism gave a satisfying, heavy click, and the latch sprang open.
Behind her, the shouting of the adults faded into a dull background hum. Victor, Eleanor, Sarah, and Agent Hayes had stopped their frantic struggle, all of them staring in breathless anticipation as Clara lifted the lid of the wooden box.
Inside lay a thick stack of legal documents tied with faded blue ribbon, a heavy gold signet ring bearing the phoenix crest, and a small, vintage audio cassette tape labeled with a date from ten years ago—the exact night of the fatal fire.
Clara reached in and picked up the cassette tape first. Her fingers traced the handwritten label, recognizing her father’s sharp, precise handwriting. She looked back over her shoulder at the tense crowd waiting outside the vault.
“What is it, Clara?” Agent Hayes asked cautiously, lowering her weapon just an inch as she stepped toward the threshold.
“It’s my father’s voice,” Clara whispered, her heart swelling with a strange, aching mixture of grief and vindication.
Before anyone else could step into the vault, Eleanor lunged forward with sudden, desperate speed, shoving Agent Hayes aside and grabbing the wooden box from the pedestal.
“If I can’t have the estate, nobody can!” Eleanor screamed, hurling the box toward the sparking auxiliary terminal where exposed wires crackled with electricity.

The box struck the sparks, showering the concrete floor with a cascade of white-hot sparks as the legal documents caught fire instantly.
Victor shouted in pure rage, tackling Eleanor to the ground just as the countdown timer on the main console hit zero.
