Chapter 11: The Descent into the Service Stairwell

The hum of the emergency lights filled the tense silence as Agent Hayes stood up from Marcus, her hand resting firmly on her holstered sidearm. The iron service doors leading down to the basement were swinging open on their heavy hinges, a draft of cold, stagnant air billowing up from the underground levels.

“Secure the perimeter around the service stairs,” Hayes barked into her shoulder radio. “Two officers with me. The rest of you hold this room and keep these people contained.”

Victor grabbed Clara’s hand before she could pull away. His grip was surprisingly gentle, though his palm was cold and slick with nervous sweat. “You can’t go down there, Clara. It’s a maze. If Eleanor reaches the vault first, she’ll seal the blast doors.”

Clara yanked her hand free from his grasp, wiping her palm against the damp fabric of her beige dress. Her eyes burned with a hard, unyielding resolve that mirrored the woman in the old photograph.

“You’ve spent my whole life keeping me away from the truth, Victor,” Clara said, her voice steady and chillingly calm. “Every lie you told, every time you let Eleanor punish me, it led to this moment. I’m going down those stairs, whether you come with me or not.”

Sarah pushed past the tactical officers, ignoring the protests of the agents, and stepped directly in front of Clara. Her face was grim, her eyes swimming with a mixture of fear and fierce maternal protectiveness that she had hidden for a decade.

“She’s right, Victor,” Sarah said quietly, looking at her brother with deep disappointment. “We tried to protect her by locking her away in a gilded cage. Look where it got us. A body in the vault and a thief in the dark.”

Victor looked between the two of them, his shoulders slumping in defeat. He reached into his vest pocket and pulled out the heavy brass key—the one he had guarded with his life—and pressed it into Clara’s small palm. The metal was cold against her skin.

“The secondary lock requires both this key and the master code,” Victor said softly. “Eleanor has the flash drive, but she doesn't have the code. Only your real father knew it. And he gave it to you on the day you were born, hidden inside the pearl collar.”

Clara looked down at the pearls around her neck. The metal emblem clicked softly against her collarbone. Without another word, she turned her back on Victor and stepped past Agent Hayes into the dark, yawning mouth of the service stairwell.

The heavy iron doors slammed shut behind them with a deafening clang, locking automatically as the secondary security protocol engaged.
