Chapter 9

The heavy basement door swung open with a groan of ungreased hinges, releasing a wave of frigid, damp air that made Maya shiver instantly in her green school uniform. The scent of rotting earth mingled heavily with the sweet, sickening aroma of blooming roses, creating a surreal and suffocating atmosphere that seemed to defy the very laws of nature.
"Go on, Maya. Take a look inside," Sarah urged, gesturing gracefully toward the dark stone staircase leading down into the pitch-black abyss.
Julian stood rigidly beside the doorway, staring blankly at the dark steps. He didn't say a word, his hands trembling at his sides as he refused to look down into the subterranean space he had spent months trying to forget.
Maya gripped the banister, her knuckles turning white as she took a tentative step forward. The stairs were cold beneath her socks. As she descended deeper into the basement, the darkness slowly gave way to a strange, ethereal amber glow coming from a large glass ceiling overhead—an underground greenhouse built directly beneath the mansion's pristine backyard.
Her jaw dropped in sheer horror as her eyes adjusted to the light.
Rows upon rows of rich, freshly turned soil stretched out across the vast underground chamber. And blooming from every single mound of earth were magnificent, blood-red roses, their petals velvety and thick, drinking in the artificial sunlight pouring through the reinforced glass above.
"Do you see them, Maya?" Sarah’s voice echoed down the stone stairwell, smooth and chillingly poetic. "Your father worked very hard on this garden. Every single rosebush is fertilized with the deepest devotion."
Maya choked back a sob, her eyes darting across the rows of flowers until she froze in absolute terror. Resting near the base of the largest rosebush, half-buried under a layer of dark soil and fallen petals, was a familiar leather shoe—the exact same black patent leather pump her real mother had worn the day she disappeared.
"Mommy..." Maya whispered, her voice breaking completely as tears streamed down her face. She fell to her knees on the cold stone floor near the edge of the soil beds, pressing her hands against her mouth. "You put her here. You put her in the dirt."
Heavy footsteps sounded behind her as Julian descended the stairs, his tailored brown suit looking entirely out of place in the grim subterranean tomb. He dropped to his knees beside his daughter, pulling her into a desperate, sobbing embrace.
"I’m sorry, Maya! I’m so sorry!" Julian wept, burying his face in her braided hair. "She was going to take you away from me! She was going to leave, and I couldn't bear the thought of losing my family!"
Maya violently shoved her father away, her face hardening through her tears as she pointed a trembling finger at him.

"You're a monster," Maya snarled, her small frame shaking with pure rage. "You didn't protect our family! You destroyed it!"
Before Julian could answer, the glass ceiling above them shattered into a thousand glittering pieces with an ear-splitting crash, showering the underground greenhouse with shards of glass and moonlight.
