Chapter 8

The word "basement" struck Maya like a physical blow. The grand, luxurious living room behind her suddenly felt like a cage, its warm crystal chandelier glowing with a deceptive, sickly light. Julian remained collapsed on the welcome mat, his body shaking violently as Sarah’s hand rested on his shoulder like a heavy anchor.

"No," Maya sobbed, shaking her head frantically as she backed away from the threshold. "I'm not going down there! You're bad! Both of you are bad!"

Sarah stood up slowly, smoothing the fabric of her red pencil skirt with agonizing calm. Her long dark hair swayed in the night breeze as she turned her gaze toward the little girl. The ghostly double on the porch had vanished into thin air, leaving behind only the biting chill of the evening wind.

"Maya, obedience is a virtue," Sarah said, her voice dropping into a chilling, hypnotic tone. "You can run out into the dark, but where will you go? Your friends at school? The police? Who is going to believe a little girl over a respected man like your father?"

Julian slowly raised his head, his eyes bloodshot and hollow. He looked at Maya with an expression of profound, agonizing defeat.

"Maya... please," Julian choked out, his voice barely a rasp. "Just... just come inside. Don't stay out here alone."

Maya looked at her father, feeling a mix of deep pity and paralyzing fear. The tall, proud man who used to carry her on his shoulders was completely gone. Reluctantly, she stepped back inside the foyer, her small sneakers clicking softly against the Persian rug. She kept a wide berth around Sarah, watching the woman’s every move like a cornered animal.

Sarah smiled faintly, turning toward the ornate hallway that led toward the back of the house—the hallway that led directly to the heavy iron-reinforced door of the basement.

"Follow me, sweetheart," Sarah instructed, walking with slow, deliberate steps. "It’s time you saw where your mother’s favorite dresses really came from."

Julian pushed himself up from the floor, his legs wobbling as he followed behind Sarah like a ghost himself. Maya had no choice. She walked behind her father, her small hand trailing along the wood-paneled walls of the hallway. As she dragged her fingers along the wall, she noticed something terrifying: the wood felt damp, and faint, scratching sounds echoed from deep behind the panels, accompanied by the sound of muffled crying.

"Do you hear them, Maya?" Sarah whispered, stopping in front of the heavy basement door. "The walls have very good memories in this house. They remember every scream, every plea, every tear."

Sarah pulled a heavy brass key from the pocket of her red pencil skirt and slid it into the keyhole. With a loud, echoing clack, the lock turned. She pulled the door open, and a wave of freezing, subterranean air rushed out, carrying the unbearable scent of damp earth and rotting flowers.
